Masterclass

The word masterclass now sits on sessions that have almost nothing in common. An Image Consulting Business Institute (ICBI) session of three hours, live, was listed at ₹99. CA Monk (CA stands for chartered accountant) lists a 40-hour recorded course at ₹3,499. Both are called masterclasses. So is a premium programme that carries the word in its name.

That matters because the word promises something specific. In its original form, an expert watches a student perform or present, then corrects the work in front of the room. Few sales pages today promise that.

For a coach, speaker or founder, the confusion cuts both ways. You may pay for a "masterclass" that is really a webinar. Or you may call your own session a masterclass when it is a talk. Either way, judge the contents, not the label.

Six checks you can run on any sales page are given below.

A masterclass, also written master class, is a class given to students of one discipline by an expert in it, most often in music. The expert works on something the students have prepared and corrects it in front of the room. The format is traced to the pianist Franz Liszt (Wikipedia, Master class).

In the classic version, one student performs a prepared piece, the expert advises, and the student performs again. The advice goes to refinement, such as tone and phrasing, because the basics are assumed to be in place (Wikipedia).

The word is also used loosely for any outstanding performance, as in "a masterclass in overtaking". MasterClass, one word with a capital C, is a company's name for its online platform. It does not define the format.

A webinar is an online talk where the host presents and the audience mostly listens. A workshop is a session where participants do tasks while it runs. A masterclass is the one where the expert examines work that learners bring, and responds to it.

What happens to your work in each format

The test is what happens to your work, not the length or the price. A talk that offers feedback only through a paid follow-on programme is a webinar with a better name.

Related formats are different again. A keynote speech is a talk to an audience, with no teaching of individuals. A free session offered to collect contacts is a lead magnet.

In the seven sessions below, the label covers sessions priced from ₹21 to ₹3,499 and running from 3 to 40 hours where hours are stated. These are seven masterclasses on four provider pages, priced in rupees, as listed in October 2026. They are a convenience sample, not every masterclass on those pages.

Three of the seven are live and four are recorded. Dividing price by stated hours, the two ₹99 live sessions of three hours work out at ₹33 an hour. The four CA Monk courses work out at about ₹71 to ₹91 an hour (₹1,999 over 28, 25 and 22 hours, then ₹3,499 over 40 hours at about ₹87). The 22-hour course is stated as "22+", so ₹91 is a ceiling for it. Six of the seven state their hours. The same CA Monk page lists other courses that are longer and cheaper per hour, so these rates are a reference, not a limit.

What these pages promise is teaching, an action item per skill, or a certificate of completion. None promises a critique of your own work. Outside India, Berklee Online's two-hour live masterclasses say their optional projects "will not be graded, and will not be critiqued by an instructor" (Berklee Online).

Score each check pass or fail on the sales page before you pay, or on your own page before you use the word.

Who teaches it, and can you verify them?

Pass: a named person whose track record you can confirm from sources outside the sales page. Fail: no name, or credentials found only on the page itself.

How long is it, and is it live or recorded?

Pass: both are stated before you pay. Fail: either is missing, or "lifetime access" replaces a number of hours.

Does the expert look at your work?

Pass: you present or submit something and the expert responds to it specifically. Fail: the only contact is a general question-and-answer slot.

What do you hold at the end?

Pass: a finished or revised piece of work, such as a script, a draft or a plan. Fail: notes and a certificate only.

What does it cost per hour?

Pass: price and hours are both stated, so you can compute the hourly rate (price ÷ stated hours). Fail: hours are missing. Compare the result with the rates in the table section above as a reference, not a limit.

What is sold next?

Six passes make a masterclass. A fail on the third check makes it a webinar or talk, whatever it is called, so pay accordingly.
