Brand Identity
Brand identity is the set of choices you control to show buyers who you are: name, promise, personality, voice and look. A logo is only one small part of it.

What is brand identity?
Brand identity is the set of choices you make on purpose and repeat everywhere, so a buyer can tell who you are and what you promise.
Key takeaways
- Brand image is what the buyer concludes about you. You control your identity. You can only influence the image, by keeping the identity consistent.
- As of October 2026, two Indian design providers advertise ₹15,000 to ₹50,000 (GraphicArc, experienced freelancers) or ₹20,000 to ₹50,000 (Creative Orion) for a logo-led package, and Creative Orion advertises ₹60,000 to ₹1,50,000 once a positioning session is included.
- Write the sheet below first, run the ten-minute check, and only then brief a designer.
Quick facts
- Who controls it
- You. The buyer's resulting brand image you can only influence.
- Often confused with
- Logo, branding, brand image and trade mark
Introduction
Ask three founders what their brand identity is and you will hear "my logo", "my colours" and "how people see me". The first two are parts of it. The third is something else, called brand image, and you do not control it directly.
The confusion costs money. Design studios price a logo-and-palette job and the strategy work behind it in separate tiers, so it is easy to buy the first and skip the second. Then nobody has told the designer who the logo is for. A logo drawn before the promise is settled is a guess about who you serve, and a wrong guess can mean paying for the artwork twice.
This page defines brand identity, separates it from the terms it gets mixed up with, and gives you a one-page sheet to fill in before you brief anyone. You can complete it in one sitting. A ten-minute check then shows whether your name, promise and look already match in the places buyers meet you.
What brand identity includes
It has five parts: a name, a one-line promise to a named buyer, three personality traits, a voice, and a look (logo, colours, fonts, photo style).
The American Marketing Association defines a brand as "a name, term, design, symbol, or any other feature that identifies one seller's goods or service as distinct from those of other sellers" (AMA). Identity is the deliberate version of that: you choose the features instead of letting them pile up.
Most checklists of identity elements list name, logo, colours, fonts and voice. A promise to a named buyer belongs on the list too, because a designer cannot invent it.
What brand identity looks like for a coach or consultant
For a service expert, brand identity is mostly a matter of matching: the same name, the same promise to the same buyer, and the same tone wherever a buyer finds you.
Each item can look fine alone. Together, a mismatched name, promise and logo present several different people, and the buyer's image becomes "unclear". The LinkedIn headline is the first place to match; see building a personal brand on LinkedIn.
How to write your brand identity before briefing a designer
Write six lines before briefing a designer: name, promise, personality, voice, look and places. Give each a pass test.
- Name. One spelling, used everywhere. Pass: the first page of search results and the IP India trade mark search show no other business under the same name in your field. Fail: another business holds the name, so check it with IP India before you spend.
- Promise. "I help [named buyer] [get result] by [method]." Pass: a stranger can name your buyer after one read.
- Personality. Three words, each with a real opposite ("warm, not chummy"). Pass: the opposite is something you could plausibly choose.
- Voice. Three phrases you would say and three you would not. Pass: you can rewrite one sentence of your bio in it.
- Look. One logo file, two colours (with codes), two fonts, one photo style. Pass: someone else could rebuild your post cover from the sheet.
- Places. LinkedIn, website, WhatsApp Business profile, proposal or invoice, speaker deck, email signature. Pass: you have named all six places and have a screenshot or file of each. Fail: any place is missing or you have not opened it in the last month.
The ten-minute check
Open all six places side by side and check name, buyer, colours and tone in ten minutes. Test four things in each: the same name spelling, the same buyer named in the first line, the same two colours, the same tone. Any mismatch is the first fix, before any redesign. The same check applies to a website for coaches.
- Your result
- Lines 1 to 4 pass, look is missing
- What to do
- Brief a designer with the sheet
- Your result
- Line 2 fails, or you cannot finish line 3
- What to do
- Fix the promise first
- Your result
- Everything passes, places disagree
- What to do
- Align the six places before spending
What brand identity design costs in India
As of October 2026, two Indian design providers publish these ranges: GraphicArc and Creative Orion. Creative Orion says its early-stage package typically excludes strategic work. These are two providers' advertised ranges, not the market.
Pay for the promise before the artwork. A well-drawn logo for an unclear promise is the expensive mistake.
Check the name before you spend on it. As of October 2026, the fee table of the Intellectual Property Office of India (IP India) lists the trade mark application (Form TM-A) at ₹4,500 for e-filing by an individual, startup or small enterprise, and ₹9,000 in all other cases, for each class and each mark (IP India).

Brand identity vs logo, branding and brand image
Brand identity is what you decide and show. A logo is one mark inside it. Branding is the work of building it. Brand image is what the buyer concludes after meeting it. You own the first three. You only influence the fourth.
Identity and image can disagree. You say "strategic adviser", the buyer says "cheap trainer". Your main lever on that gap is the identity. A trade mark is a different thing again: the legal registration of a name or mark. Two related pages go deeper: a personal brand statement writes your promise as one testable line, and an About Me page is where a buyer checks it.

Example
A leadership coach's LinkedIn headline says "Mindset coach for women leaders". Her website says "Life coach for everyone". Her invoice shows a different logo and spells the business name another way. She needs no new logo to fix this. She needs one promise, such as "I help first-time women managers in IT firms handle team conflict", used in all three places.
