The short answer
Choose a life coach for a goal-led, client-centred process, a mentor for advice rooted in relevant experience, and qualified clinical support when you need mental-health analysis, diagnosis, treatment, care, or rehabilitation. In India, use 112 for immediate danger or a medical emergency, and Tele-MANAS at 14416 or 1800-89-14416 for 24×7 tele-mental-health support.

Life coach vs Qualified clinical support, point by point

Where each is stronger
A mentor wins when experience is the asset
Choose a mentor when the central question is, “Who has already done the work I need to understand?” Under the ICF framework, a traditional mentor guides a less experienced person from their own experience in a career-development area.
Urgent risk has a separate route
If there is immediate danger or a medical emergency, call 112. For tele-mental-health support and referral in India, use Tele-MANAS at 14416 or 1800-89-14416.
The role changes with the question
The clearest distinction is the work you want help with. ICF’s coaching definition frames coaching as a partnership that supports a client’s personal and professional potential. India’s Mental Healthcare Act, 2017 defines mental healthcare to include analysis, diagnosis, treatment, care, and rehabilitation.
A mentor is a third route, not a softer label for either role. The ICF mentor handbook describes traditional mentoring as guidance based on the mentor’s own experience in a specific career-development area.

Check the claim behind the title
A title is not a substitute for a check. If a coach claims ICF ACC, ask them to confirm the credential. ICF’s 2025 ACC candidate guide sets 60 hours of coach-specific education, 100 client-coaching hours, 10 mentor-coaching hours over at least three months, a performance evaluation, and an exam as ACC requirements.
For a clinical psychologist in India, the Rehabilitation Council of India lists Clinical Psychologists in the Central Rehabilitation Register and says valid active registration is required to practise as a registered rehabilitation professional or personnel.
Urgent support does not wait for the right title
As of September 2026, call 112 for immediate emergency assistance in India. The government’s Emergency Response Support System covers police, fire and rescue, and health emergencies.
For 24×7 tele-mental-health support and referral, the Directorate General of Health Services directs the public to Tele-MANAS at 14416 or 1800-89-14416.
Use a decision map before booking
A title alone does not tell you what kind of support you will receive. Start with the question you need answered, then check the person’s relevant credentials before you share sensitive information.
Match the question to the support route
Our verdict
A life coach wins when your main need is a goal-led process and your own next actions. Qualified clinical support wins when you need mental-health care, while a mentor wins when you want advice rooted in relevant experience.
How we compared
This comparison uses the ICF’s published definitions and ACC candidate requirements, the Mental Healthcare Act, 2017, RCI registration guidance, and Government of India emergency and Tele-MANAS information. It does not treat “therapist” as a single India-wide credential.
