How to Find Your Purpose: A 30-Day Test, Not a Search

How to find your purpose: pick three directions, spend twelve one-hour sessions testing them in real life, score each one, and keep the direction that gives energy, usefulness and wanting to improve.

Key takeaways

  1. 01
Find your purpose by testing, not reflecting: write three directions, run four one-hour sessions on each, score every session out of 6, and keep any direction that totals 16 or more out of 24.
  2. 02
The test takes 12 hours, about 17% to 20% of the leisure time working-age Indians have over four weeks (our calculation from the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's 2024 Time Use Survey).
  3. 03
Purpose is not the same as passion or a job, and it can sit beside your income. Profit gets its own check.
  4. 04
Losing interest in almost everything, most of the day, for two weeks or more is a reason to see a doctor before running any test.

Wanting a sense of purpose is close to universal among Gen Z and millennial respondents in India: 99% of Gen Zs and 98% of millennials say it is important for their job satisfaction, in Deloitte's 2026 survey. That makes not knowing yours a practical problem, not a philosophical one.

Finding it is where most people stall. In our view, thinking harder rarely settles the question, because purpose shows up more reliably as a reaction to doing something than as an answer you can reason out. A sentence written on a Sunday night cannot tell you whether you would still want that work on Thursday.

The test below is built for people with a pay cheque to protect and no obvious passion to start from. Every step is something you can do this week, and its time cost is shown before you begin. Money gets its own check, because Purpose, Passion and Profit are three different questions.

How do you find your purpose in 30 days?

Run a four-week test: write three candidate directions, spend four one-hour sessions on each in real life, score every session, and keep the directions that score well. Purpose is a direction you confirm by acting on it. Setting up takes about 20 minutes and the sessions take 12 hours.

  1. 1

    Write three directions (20 minutes)

Finish these four sentences, as many times as they will let you: "People come to me for ___." "I lose track of time when ___." "A problem that bothers me is ___." "I am curious about ___, even though I have no proof I would like it." Pick one answer each from "People come to me for", "A problem that bothers me is" and "I am curious about". If a "lose track of time" answer beats any of them, swap it in. Turn each of your three into one sentence: "I want [who] to [experience] because I [do what]." An illustration: "I want first-generation job seekers to walk into interviews prepared, because I break the process into steps."

  2. 2

Run 12 one-hour sessions in four weeks

Do three a week, four per direction, in mixed order. Aim to end each session with something outside your head: a page written, a thing repaired, a person helped. If three hours a week is not possible, run the same 12 sessions over six weeks. The scores matter, not the calendar.
  3. 3

    Score each session

Give each question 0, 1 or 2, so a session scores up to 6. Score Energy and Outward use straight after the session. Score Pull at the start of your next session on the same direction, by asking what you did in between. For the last session on each direction, score Pull two days later.

  1. 1

    Decide on day 30

Add the four sessions for each direction, out of 24 at most. 16 to 24: keep it and run four more weeks, going deeper. 10 to 15: change one thing (the audience, the format or the setting) and retest. 0 to 9: drop it without guilt. These cut-offs are our rule of thumb, not a validated scale. An illustration of one direction scored is in the table below.
  2. 2

Run the Profit check on every direction you keep

Write down the rupees you need each month, one specific person or organisation that could pay or fund this direction, and the smallest first paid or funded act. You pass if you can name the person or organisation and an amount. A fail does not kill the direction. It means the direction runs beside your income, not instead of it. Before you cut your hours or quit anything, work out your runway: savings divided by (monthly spending minus monthly income from the direction). This assumes you have stopped drawing your salary. As an illustration, ₹3,00,000 of savings, ₹40,000 of spending and ₹10,000 of income from the direction gives ₹3,00,000 ÷ ₹30,000 = 10 months. This is our model, not an official figure. Our recommendation is a second four-week round before you change your job on one score.

Why test your purpose in real life instead of only thinking about it?

Testing gives you evidence that reflection cannot: how you feel after the work, who it helped, and whether you wanted more. Reflection alone rearranges what you already believe about yourself, so it stalls when you believe you have no interests.

Our test is our own design. It borrows one idea from life crafting, a method proposed in 2019 that pairs reflection with concrete if-then plans (Schippers and Ziegler). That paper does not test our scoring, so treat the scores as your own evidence.

If you feel you love nothing right now, the test still works: the fourth sentence asks for curiosity, not love, and the scores decide, not the excitement you felt beforehand. If you have too many options, the limit of three does the choosing.

What makes a direction testable when you are trying to find your purpose?

A direction is testable when one hour can produce something outward that someone else could see or use. Three directions is enough to compare: more spreads twelve hours too thin, and fewer leaves nothing to compare. These examples show the shape:

DirectionOne-hour sessionOutward result
Explaining thingsTeach one concept to one person, then write it up on one pageA named learner and a written page
Fixing or buildingRepair or build something for someone elseA working item handed over
CaringSpend an hour on a task for a local charityA finished task and the hours logged
MakingCreate one piece (a design, a recipe, a song) and show it to three peopleThree reactions you can read

Drop any direction that needs money or permission before the first hour. You can return to it after the test.

Is purpose the same as passion, a career or ikigai?

No. Purpose is the direction you want your effort to serve, passion is what energises you, and a career is how you are paid. Ikigai, a Japanese word for a reason for living, is a separate idea that is often confused with all three. The three can overlap or sit apart, so this page tests Purpose, Passion and Profit separately.

The four-circle diagram often sold as ikigai (what you love, what you are good at, what the world needs, what you can be paid for) did not originate in Japan. Marc Winn created it in 2014 by joining the word ikigai to Andrés Zuzunaga's existing purpose diagram, as he states on his own site. The word itself was popularised in 1966 by the psychiatrist Mieko Kamiya.

The diagram implies one activity should satisfy all four circles at once. That is rare, and waiting for it keeps people stuck. Many people hold their purpose beside a salary, which is why the Profit check asks for a path to money, not a replacement for your pay.

How much of your time does the 30-day test cost?

The test costs 12 hours, which is about 17% to 20% of the leisure hours that working-age Indians have across four weeks. Hours for the sessions come from the leisure pool, not from sleep or work.

The Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation's Time Use Survey 2024 covered 1,39,487 households and 4,54,192 persons aged 6 and above from January to December 2024. For ages 15 to 59 it records the average minutes a day, per person, on culture, leisure, mass media and sports. The table below is our calculation: minutes a day multiplied by 28 days, then 12 hours (720 minutes) divided by that total.

Group, ages 15 to 59Minutes a dayMinutes over 28 daysHours over 28 daysShare used by 12 hours
Men1484,14469.117.4%
Women1293,61260.219.9%
All persons1393,89264.918.5%

The leisure category includes mass media such as television and phone use, so it is not free time for any one reader. The same survey puts unpaid domestic services at 283 minutes a day for women aged 15 to 59 and 26 for men. If that is your day, use the six-week version and protect two sessions a week.

How do you find your purpose when you already have a good job?

Run the test beside the job, not instead of it. Gallup's 2026 report finds 23% of Indian employees engaged at work and 17% thriving in their lives overall, so many employed people are not fulfilled. Those figures cover all employees, not only well-paid ones, and come from data collected from January to December 2025.

A man works on a hand-made project at a desk in the evening after his workday.
The test fits into one evening hour beside the job, so nothing has to be given up first.

In our view, a first career choice often rests on someone else's criteria: salary, safety, a parent's hopes. The three scores give you criteria of your own, built from your own hours.

How do you find your purpose when your family chose your career path?

Treat the path your family chose as a fixed condition, and run the test inside it. You are testing directions, not demanding an exit, so nobody has to be argued with yet. If a parent or a coaching centre picked your stream or degree, ask for four weeks. Bring the scored sheet and whatever you made, not a speech. The Profit check gives a family something to weigh: a named person who could pay and a monthly figure.

Bringing evidence you made, not a speech, gives a family something concrete to weigh.

When is feeling purposeless a reason to see a doctor instead?

See a doctor when low mood or loss of interest lasts most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks. The World Health Organization describes that pattern as depression and advises you to seek care if you have the symptoms.

A test of curiosity cannot work if nothing registers as interesting, so make the doctor the first step and the test the second. As of October 2026, the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare runs Tele-MANAS (Tele Mental Health Assistance and Networking Across States), a toll-free 24x7 helpline on 1800-89-14416 or the short code 14416, launched in 2022. Coaching works on direction and goals, not on clinical care, so low mood belongs with a doctor or psychologist first.

How do we help you find your Purpose, Passion and Profit?

We coach it as a three-month Private Coaching programme: Month 1 is Inner Awareness, Month 2 is Soul and Karma, Month 3 is Living the Wisdom. The 30-day test above is the part you can run alone. If you want someone alongside you for three months, that is what our Private Coaching is for. You can read more about our work.

To ask about Private Coaching, send us your three directions and your scores, and ask for the session length, the current fee, what it includes and the terms in writing. Contact us here.

Frequently asked questions

Answer in two sentences: what you do, who it helps, and one proof, such as "I help [who] with [what]. Recently I [specific result]." Use a direction you have tested, because the proof makes the sentence believable.

No. Purpose is a direction, not a requirement, and a life can be good without one sentence that sums it up. If the question keeps returning, treat it as a signal and run the 30-day test.
Yes. Treat your purpose as a direction you re-test, not a verdict you carry for life. Run the test again when your job, city or responsibilities change, and drop what no longer scores 16 or more.
Score both on outward use. A purpose scores well on all three questions and reaches 16 of 24 across four sessions; a hobby typically scores 0 on outward use, because nobody besides you benefits.
Thirty days gives a first answer: the directions worth four more weeks and the ones to drop. Run another four-week round whenever your job or circumstances change.
